We are all guilty of saying yes too often. We attend meetings when we shouldn’t. We spend time with people when we shouldn’t. We answer the phone when we shouldn’t. And God help all of us who respond to emails when we shouldn’t.
Effective leaders recognize that every no is also a yes. They understand that time is their most precious resource and they choose what they say yes or no to. If you want to be a leader start to choose your yes’s and no’s. Say no to that meeting and say yes to 1 hour of productive time working on an important project. Say no to that phone call and say yes to that relationship you are building with the person sitting in your office. Say no to perfection and yes to sustainable performance. Say no to that email and say yes to focused energy on something that matters.
