Hey what's up everyone Matt cross here from mattcrosscoaching.com and today we're talking about building better working relationships. Now I believe that building strong relationships is a core skill that all leaders need and in this video I'm going to share three simple strategies that you can start using today to build stronger working relationships.

Relationships matter - particularly for leaders - because they allow us to do a lot of heavy lifting. Relationships are a lot like pulleys in that they allow us to accomplish more with less effort.

Relationships have an exponential effect on every single thing that we do so I wanted to introduce you to three key strategies that you can use to build better working relationships with the people you work with.

The first of these strategies is what I call working the three P's and here's what I mean by that. When you build better working relationships focus on getting to know people personally and professionally but also build it around some degree of productivity. There has to be a two-way exchange of value if you are going to build a good relationship. You need to be producing something of value for them and they need to be producing something of value for you.

Most people are really good at one of these areas, but by focusing on only one, they end up creating very one-dimensional relationships that fail them.

The second strategy that I always recommend is to expand empathy. Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another but unfortunately a lot of people lack this ability. When you fail to understand what others are feeling you won't relate, you won't connect and you'll turn people off. As a leader you must recognize that empathy is our biggest asset - it's worth its weight and gold. When you ask better questions you'll understand and share the feelings of another and create a much deeper bond that works as emotional capital in your relationship. Empathy acts like that extra wheel in the pulley. It lets you lift more weight with less effort.

The third strategy is to focus less on me and more on we. No one likes a selfish person but as leaders we tend to use language that implies that maybe we're just thinking of ourselves. We'll say things like "this is my team" or "I think" or "I believe we should do X Y or Z" instead of saying "this is our team" or "what do you think" If you want to be a good leader, enlist other people and make it more about us and less about me! Simply changing your language can have a tremendous impact on your relationships.

So there are 3 simple strategies that you can start using today to build better relationships!
